Doreen and Decoy flyin' home, 2004 Bill Wright photo Doreen Shumpert is an award-winning equine freelance writer with a degree in technical journalism from Colorado State University, along with a concentration in equine science. She specializes in event coverage (such as the George Strait Team Roping Classic), and how to-training articles with photos. To date, she has written for dozens of local and national equine publications. A life-long horsewoman, she grew up showing all English, western, and speed events in 4-H, open shows, and breed shows including POAs. During those days, you rode what the family could afford; consequently she learned to train her own horses and to help others do the same. She has also had formal training and competition experience in jumping, reining and dressage, and has served as a 4-H leader and open and breed show judge. Doreen began giving riding lessons at the age of 14, and her students have gone on to win many state all-around titles, many on horses she trained. While at CSU, she became a certified riding instructor for both English and Western, soon became a class teaching assistant, showed on the college show team, ran barrels in college rodeo, and traveled as a clinician with the riding instructor team. After graduating in 1996, she continued to give lessons, show and run barrels--earning the Colorado Barrel Racing Association Rookie of the Year title in 2000 and the Lazy Heart E Novice Horse Barrel Racing title in 2004. Currently, she does equine freelance from home and is "mom" to five kids total. In between she still tries to help her hubby, Dave, ride as time allows, and has a new project or two in mind for 2007.
